Crossover flights involve placing crews from more than one country on the same spacecraft. The Russian Space Agency Roscosmos always wants to place at least one of its representatives on the Russian section of the ISS. In addition, it aims to have at least one NASA representative in the US department.
Russian Space Agency Roscosmos also stated that this decision was taken “to preserve the reliability of the ISS as a whole.” International Space Station ISS is very important for both Russia and the USA. Launched in 1998, the ISS is a symbol of US-Russia cooperation following the end of the Cold War and the space race.
Roscosmos Director General Yuri Borisov has previously stated that Russia wants to focus on building its own space station. To achieve this goal, he announced that he would withdraw from the ISS “after 2024.” NASA, on the other hand, was planning how to manage events after Russia’s departure from the ISS. In addition, NASA committed to maintaining the ISS until at least 2030.
